In 'Lady Chatterley's Lover', Lawrence argues for individual regeneration, which can be found only through the relationship between man and woman (and, he asserts sometimes, man and man). Love and personal relationships are the threads that bind this novel together. Lawrence explores a wide range of different types of relationships. The reader sees the brutal, bullying relationship between Mellors and his wife Bertha, who punishes him by preventing his pleasure. There is Tommy Dukes, who has no relationship because he cannot find a woman who he respects intellectually and at the same time finds desirable. There is also the perverse, maternal relationship that ultimately develops between Clifford and Mrs. Bolton after Connie has left. Masterfully written, one of the most important novels of all time. This the original unexpurgated edition.

Until now. my only exposure to the book has been naughty gossip. "Did you hear how dirty hit was" sort of stuff. Then I read an article on early twentieth century literature that mentioned how the book had been banned across Europe. I found it for 99 cents on Amazon and downloaded it for a casual read.

What I found was an incredibly complex book of a young woman of the lower English nobility trapped with a crippled husband, a moldering estate, the social ad moral standards of post WWI and her passion to find her way out of this entrapment. To initial surprise and subsequent enjoyment there were no raw sex scenes in the book. Yes, there were graphic depictions of her and her multiple paramours but only in the context of her search for reality and resolution of her life. The overall tone of the book is an continuous description of her search for not happiness, but clarity in her life. It is told overwhelmingly from the female perspective and almost makes me want to believe that DH Lawrence was really a pen name for a female writer,

Read it slowly and the pain and hope that is Lady Chatterly.

Classic literature at its best. Timeless message.
Gave me historical background which complemented the story very well as if the author lived in the same period.Informati
Supposed to be a great classic, and I've read many of then, but this one just didn't hold my attention.
This is a revolutionary book, which may be even the first book that dares to write about a woman's desires and sexuality in an open way. I loved reading it when i was a teenager (and a virgin) and i was amazed by some of the details, how it openly described some scenes. I am now a grown up woman and re-read it and happily was amazed again, but this time also with the debth of its psycological analysis about how people evolve to their selves. Strongly recommend!
I read this book back in the 60s and enjoyed then, forgot about it over the years, read it again and enjoyed it again. Just think, back then it was considered to be very raunchy. Compare to now,ha,it was very tame.
I really cannot see what all the accolades are for. The book is no longer shocking, just a crude depiction of romantic intimacy. It was interesting to read about popular views on self gratification and, to know that people were concerned about the growth of industry and the by products-- pollution. It was an interesting commentary on the lower uneducated working class.
With this specific version of the book, I noticed a couple of places where there was apparently missing some narrative. A sentence seemed to completely change topic without finishing, it was like some of it was missing, starting in the middle of a sentence. It was really weird. But honestly I don't think I missed anything important.
It was an okay book. It was kind of sad, in my opinion. Very interesting though, the juxtaposition of those who live mentally/the intellectuals/the upper class with the physical/primal/uneducated/lower class. It wasn't too long of a read either. I think it's definitely a good book to read at some point in your lifetime but it's not a suspenseful book you won't be able to put down.
